Our trip to Alaska is just around the corner. As usual, I’m trying to think of the best way to get through the next 10 days with as light of a load as possible.
It’s practically mission impossible with my two kids, camera gear and suitcases galore. I’m sure I’ll figure out the fine art of ‘packing lightly’ in about 50 years.
Tips for Packing for a Trip
- Space Saver Bags. I discovered this about 2 trips ago and I love them. You lightly stuff them with a layer of clothes. Roll the package. There are holes at the bottom that release the air as you roll. Voila! Clothes are compressed and allow for easy packing. I like to organize it by outfits so that everything is already together when I need it. They’re also very useful for separating the dirty clothes. As the kids clothes get soiled, I put it in a bag, seal it and keep it from the clean clothes. At the end of the trip, they’re all set for packing up and cleaning when I get home.
- Stuff socks and undies into shoes. Maximize space by stuffing empty socks with socks or undies.
- Power surge protector or extension cord. Okay, don’t laugh at me. I like to travel with a power surge protector. Between my electronics, the husband’s and the kids, electrical outlets are hard to come by. I happened to learn this at a photography conference and it was so helpful when I needed to charge my camera, phone and laptop.
- Activity Bags for the Kids. I love starting off a trip with a little goodie bag for the kids. Mine usually include a pack of crayons, a coloring book, stickers, a baggy of pretzels and a small toy. If the plane ride isn’t long, it manages to keep them occupied. They’re always excited to get their baggy and start on their adventure.
- Umbrella Strollers. Another tip for the families that travel, umbrella strollers! Light weight, budget friendly and so easy to use.
Those are just some of the tips that I have for packing for a trip. I try to pack lightly but I’m not quite there yet.
