Fun! Rhett had a friend whose mom did a gingerbread man decorating activity at his December birthday party several years ago, and it was fun. She bought these really cool, pre-made big gingerbread men (so she wouldn’t have to bake them herself), and the kids enjoyed decorating them. Can’t say it lasted for more than 10 minutes, but it was fun while they were doing it.
Gingerbread houses, oy! I have a love-hate relationship with them. I think they are really cool, and if I was just doing it myself, it would be fun and come out really pretty. Once kids get involved, the houses can run the gamut. I’ve seen some that are pretty decent, and some that are terrible. And it’s not the kids’ fault. It’s just the construction of the house is not as easy as it looks. We did one last year, and it was okay. Rhett got frustrated with it after about 10 minutes, so I had to convince him to finish it out with me. We couldn’t get the actual structure to stick together with the stuff that was provided in the kit. So, I used Gorilla Glue! Whatever works is my motto!! It worked well, just be prepared with backup reinforcements. Putting all of the smaller decorations on was easier and more fun. I did not buy one this year because I hated to spend the money on it when we weren’t “feeling it.”
We have decorated sugar cookies with different colored icing several times, and it is fun. Again, it’s fun for smaller kids for like 10 minutes, and then the impatience sets in. I understand, cuz I just want to eat the cookies at the end of it all haha!
