I really did like GOT at first. When it first aired, I enjoyed seeing fascinating strong female characters. I liked the family plotting and intrigue. I enjoyed the variety of characters. I liked all the political stuff. I don’t care for fantasy genre at all, but even that didn’t bother me too much. I was rolling with it just fine for a while.
Where the show started to lose me was the ridiculous amount of “male-ness” on the show. Male writing, male directing, gratuitous nudity and sexual assault, building female characters up only to let them down (basically the theme of this season), incest in 3 relationships as the norm and portrayed as anything other than “wrong” was horrible. I just got sick of it. I could not respect the show any longer. There were other big/historical shows that I started watching during that same time (such as Outlander), that were just the complete opposite. It was a stark contrast (no pun intended 😉 ), and with the long waits between seasons being another big turn-off, I simply moved on to better things. I felt invested in the show, and I was interested in plot twists, so I stuck with it. Unfortunately, nothing ever turned out how I was rooting, so that became a turn off too. Once Dany started riding dragons, I thought that was really stupid and the fantasy element became a turn off as well. It was like, one-by-one, things were turning me off. And then I started looking for reasons to dislike the show. And that’s not cool. It takes away the true enjoyment of it. One major thing too that I also disliked along the way was a lack of hot guys on the show. Sorry, but I can’t help it. That carries over from my GH days haha! I just thought the male casting was weak and boring as hell. Kit H. does nothing for me, and I don’t think he’s hot at all. I would have loved to see some really good-looking men on the show. I thought so many of the women were super-attractive in many different ways. But the men were a let-down. The cutest guy, I thought, was dude who played Rob Stark, but then, we know how that ended. Oh well. That’s just me being shallow about wanting to see hot guys on screen 🙂 When I started watching Outlander, Poldark, Last Kingdom, even Justified, my god, the men were so fine. And then I’d tune into the mediocre guys on GOT, and again, another stark contrast. I loved Stephen Dillane and Sean Bean back in their hot days, so that was fun to see them as older guys.
I will look back at this show as one of the most over-rated I ever watched. It became a caricature of itself. I will not be watching any of the spin-offs (because those are needed), that’s for sure.
