Rhett has been in standardized testing all last week, and will be all this week too. He’s in 3rd grade, so that’s a big testing year. His brain is fried haha! He’s so over it. I’m not a fan of all this testing, but oh well, just a hazard of the U.S. public ed system. Rhett will be super happy when it’s all over.
Also went to his “curriculum” night a few weeks ago, which has now taken the place of the more fun “back to school” night in schools around here. It was so not fun. Very blah! They push the reading curriculum, tests, and scores super hard in 3rd grade. And that’s basically what we got to hear about for an hour. Thank goodness Rhett likes to read, because I swear, it would be a battle if he did not. He’s doing great with his reading. Always room for improvement, and hopefully he continues to succeed. But, man, I’ll tell you, I was not happy with the strong push. It sucks for kids who don’t love reading.
Overall, Rhett tells me that in 3rd grade that the days seem longer because they are not as fun. And overall, that is the general vibe I am getting. It seems like there was such a leap from 2nd to 3rd in that regard. Makes me sad because I don’t like to think about the “fun” grades as being over. He still has fun in Art, Music, PE, that kind of thing. But, in the classroom, everything is much more serious and there is a lot less “fun” time.
