I’m almost halfway through. It’s a little more melancholy than I thought it would be, but there are moments that make me laugh out loud (like why you shouldn’t trust tall people).

Ove reminds me of little of elderly Carl in the movie Up (attitude-wise, not plot-wise).

LOL – I kept thinking “This old man is just like the guy in ‘UP'”
It took me awhile to get through his gruff exterior but now I’m kinda loving the old man. I’ve still got a ways to go and can’t wait to learn more about his wife and all the “color” she brought into his world. 🙂

I’ve got a quarter of the book still left and I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve got teary-eyed. He’s so grumpy and sweet at the same time.

When the kid with the bike inquired about Sonja and Ove softened up….oh so sweet!
This read is slow going for me but I’m enjoying it a great deal!

This book was Ove. His grumpiness took patience. I had to push through the rough exterior to discover the man he was. Then before I knew it, I was loving all of his little imperfections. By the end of the book, I felt like I was his neighbor….loving his little ways and pushing aside his gruffness. I wanted to hug him and bake him cookies.

I ended up really embracing the book. I found myself crying for and loving this sweet old man. I don’t think I’ll look at a Saab or Volvo the same. lol I hate to admit it but I’m guilty of not sitting through the rantings of my elders. Life in general is crazy enough but there is so much to be found beyond the belly aching and ranting. Now I don’t think I was the “blonde weed” in the book but I don’t think I could have been as patient as Parvaneh.

But still – a great read! I’m glad I picked this one up.

Loving someone is like moving into a house,” Sonja used to say. “At first you fall in love with all the new things, amazed every morning that all this belongs to you, as if fearing that someone would suddenly come rushing in through the door to explain that a terrible mistake had been made, you weren’t actually supposed to live in a wonderful place like this. Then over the years the walls become weathered, the wood splinters here and there, and you start to love that house not so much because of all its perfection, but rather for its imperfections. You get to know all the nooks and crannies. How to avoid getting the key caught in the lock when it’s cold outside. Which of the floorboards flex slightly when one steps on them or exactly how to open the wardrobe doors without them creaking. These are the little secrets that make it your home”

There’s something about motherhood that makes life feel like you’ve come full #circle. I feel it so much more when it comes to my daughter.

Every time I look at her or talk to her, I ask myself “What do I want for her in this situation?” Am I protecting her from the dark things in this world? Am I helping her spread her wings? Is she a budding leader? Is she happy? Am I making her better? Does she have everything that I was missing?

As a parent, you want them to have more than you in all aspects of life. You want to protect them from the things that hurt you. You strive to give them the tools that were harder for you to come by. You want to make their weaknesses their strengths. I feel this way with my son too, of course, but raising a strong young woman has always been one of my fears - fear of failing or choosing wrong.

Yet, even at 11 years old, she’s so much more than I could have imagined. ❤️ Life has indeed come full circle in so many ways because I look at her and see what I could have become. ❤️❤️
