I was able to spend a long weekend in Chicago – one of my favorite cities! Unfortunately it did rain for a bit of it. My favorite part was being able to watch Hamilton at the theater. I love old theaters. I saw the show when they were in San Francisco. It’s definitely up there with Phantom of the Opera where I can watch it over and over again. Lots of great eats too!
Next week we head out to our annual camping trip and a day trip to Disneyland. Woot wooot!August 28, 2018 at 6:29 pm #5214
Fun! I still need to go to Chicago. Never been! Have a fun trip next week!!October 11, 2018 at 12:20 pm #5345
We really enjoyed doing touristy things in New York City in September. Rhett has always wanted to see the Statue of Liberty, so that was probably his favorite thing. We had bought tickets ahead of time to walk around up at the pedestal level. But, even with pre-purchased tickets, the line to get on the ferry is super long (and we weren’t even there on a “crowded” day). Lots of security. Once you get to Liberty Island, there was more security and more lines for the pedestal climb. We really enjoyed the experience, and are glad we did it at least once in our lives.
Also enjoyed going up the Empire State Building. Now, I’m not as good with heights as I used to be. I think it’s amplified by having a kid up there that high. I was so paranoid. Rhett didn’t know any better to be scared haha! I was trying to take one photo of the spire looking up, and I got a little dizzy and had to sit down, and then security yelled at me for sitting down. Ack! Oh well. The building is super cool, preserved in the Art Deco style which I love. I was in Art Deco heaven there.
We took a boat cruise around Manhattan, and that was a way to get great views of lots of different things, and get great photos. We really enjoyed that.
We took our first Uber ride ever. It worked out well. I’m not a huge fan of Uber, but in NY, it worked out well. Probably the only place I would actually want to use it.
We went on the subway for a bit. Rhett loved it because he just sees it as a train ride. The adults were not as amused haha! It wasn’t that bad, it just wasn’t great either.
There was an art installation for kids at Penn Station where our train would come in from the ‘burbs. So we went to see that. It was art made of candy, and the kids got a bunch of free candy. Rhett loved it, but at New York prices, it was a waste for adults.
New York is not my favorite city, but it was fun to take Rhett to experience some of the landmarks there, and to get to see a few things I’ve always wanted to see.October 11, 2018 at 1:41 pm #5349
Ahhh, NYC! One of my favorite cities. I was fortunate to have done a lot of the touristy stuff pre-9/11. I think it wasn’t so overwhelming in terms of security. I get it but I imagine things aren’t as easy as they used to be. Glad you guys had fun though.
LOL at your first Uber ride. We’re avid Uber users mostly because we’re often in big cities where driving in isn’t fun. Plus, you meet some interesting people.
It’s been awhile since I’ve been to NY. Been meaning to add that back to my travel list…I want to watch Hamilton in Times Square so I can scratch it off my bucket list. I’ll probably go back when both kids are old enough to sit through a Broadway show. I want them to see Phantom of the Opera in New York (or London) before they see any other ones.October 11, 2018 at 5:45 pm #5350
I would love to see a show in NY! I don’t really want to go back for any other reason, but to see a show. Being able to see a cool show would make me want to go back! Phantom of the Opera would be awesome!!
Yes, same here. We saw a lot of stuff in NY pre-9/11. It is super weird, because in January 2001, Scott’s grandparents rented a limo for the whole family to ride around the city in. We got out and did all sorts of things. It was fun. But, I am forever freaked out because we went into the World Trade Center that night. And then to think only 9 months later it was literally gone. That was so hard, so sad. An amazing, resilient city for sure. When we were on the subway, we passed through the new World Trade Center stop, and it is eerie how new and nice it looks compared to the other stops, but for a terrible reason. That freaked me out.
Haha, yes, Uber virgins no longer! I can see the merits of using the service. We’re just too ultra-paranoid to use it. I am not a fan of some of their business practices, and of course the horrible stories you hear about definitely freak me out. The company still has a long way to go to make me feel comfortable using it. If it improves, I would be more willing to do it. We know a few people who drive for Uber, and I can’t picture them doing it because I see them in a totally different light haha!October 12, 2018 at 12:09 pm #5355
LOL – I have a couple of uncles that do it in their spare time. My cousin does SFO to downtown SF on Saturday and Sunday for some quick cash. I have a niece and nephew who do it between their college classes. I’ve had more scary experiences with cabs than I have with uber (so far). I think the horror stories are very isolated and seem to occur with early morning/late night excursions. I wouldn’t take one alone but I wouldn’t take a cab alone either….just one of the many precautions women have to take in general.October 19, 2018 at 5:58 am #5389
Hope everyone has a good weekend and next week coming up! Nothing too exciting going on here. Any excitement is directed at Halloween coming up and all the candy Rhett is excited to get 🙂December 11, 2018 at 6:03 pm #5518
I’m going back to Cali, Cali, Cali. I’m going back to Cali. Styling, profiling… 🙂
Mary, we are super-excited about meeting you all in Disneyland. I haven’t been since I was 5 years old! So, I’m excited to go back as an adult. Rhett is very excited to see the kids again.
It’s our first trip of 2019, and we’re looking forward to it!December 12, 2018 at 9:27 am #5519
