4 years ago, as friends prepped for my baby shower, my one directive was “No pink! She will not be a girly-girl”. My friends and family obliged best to their abilities and I spent the next few years engaging her in coloring, playing outdoors, tossing a ball around. I dressed her in neutral colors in a utilitarian kind of style.
No frilly dresses or pink here!
Or so I thought.
She discovered Frozen. She fell in love with floral sandals. She discovered her cousin’s closet full of Princess dresses.
And just like that, I found myself raising a beautiful, adorable Princess.
During our last shopping trip to Costco, we discovered a rack full of pink, lavender and Frozen blue dresses. She HAD to have them. The next day for school, she asked to wear her Princess dress. Oh the glitter and the shimmer!
It was everything I didn’t want her to be but everything I loved about her in that moment.
Flashing back to that baby shower, I was told “You’ll love what she loves”. I’ve learned quickly that comes with being a parent. All of my hopes and dreams for her are wonderful but in the end watching her discover who she is and becoming her own person is the real dream come true.
Although, I wonder what would have happened if I had dressed her up in pink and ruffles from the get go? 🙂
Malia turned four this month and I decided to throw her the pinkest and princess-iest part she could imagine. And I loved every bit of it! Here’s a shot of her at the dessert table, sporting her princess crown, magic wand and pink tutu. Check back in later this week for a full rundown of her Princess Tea party.
I love that picture! So sassy hahahah. If it’s any consolation, I was really into the princess stuff when I was little, but I definitely grew out of it! 😉
That’s what I’m hoping for — if I let her get it out of her system, she’ll outgrow it. 🙂
