Halloween is a fun time of year for kids. There’s something about dressing up in a costume and getting free candy that no other holiday can beat.
Carving pumpkins is a great way to get kids involved with Halloween. My son is now 4 years old, and this is the first year that he was excited about participating in a pumpkin carving. I tried (and mostly succeeded) in turning the event into a learning experience. You can talk about using the senses as you carve the pumpkin. What does it feel like? What does it smell like?
Here are some pumpkin carving clean up tips for this fun toddler activity:
- Cut the top or bottom off of the pumpkin in a pentagon (5 sided) or hexagon (6 sided) shape. That way it will be easier to place back on the pumpkin.
- To make clean up easy, start with an outdoor trash bag. You can use a kitchen trash bag too. Using scissors, cut the trash bag open. I was able to start cutting my bag, and then rip it open along the seams. Spread the bag out on your table, or on the ground. I used more than one bag. Place your pumpkin on the bag and get to work.
- When you are done, simply gather up your bag/bags, wrap them up, and throw out.
Happy Carving!
