Cleaning Under Your Refrigerator
Before: Before I pull my refrigerator out to clean underneath it.
A fairly simple Spring cleaning project is to clean under your refrigerator. Being the neat-freak that I am, yes, I clean under my fridge every 6-8 weeks. You don’t necessarily need to do it that often. Try doing it for Spring cleaning, and you will see how easy it really is.
Most modern refrigerators are fairly easy to pull away from the wall. I can easily move my fridge away from the wall by myself, with little effort. I put a hand on each side of the refrigerator to grip it, and I pull. The wheels engage, and the fridge rolls forward. If you have an older refrigerator, this may be more difficult to do. Be careful! If you are unsure, call the manufacturer of your fridge, and talk to them about the best way to move the refrigerator.
Tip: Make sure you do not pull your fridge out too far, without checking on your power cord and your water line. You don’t want to pull the power cord, or water line out of the wall.
During: I have pulled my fridge away from the wall. Yikes! Look at the dust on the floor. Even though I clean under the fridge every 6-8 weeks!! Dust is my never-ending enemy in my house!!!
Once my refrigerator is pulled out, it is easy for me to clean under it and behind it. I wipe down the baseboards. I wipe down the back and the sides of the fridge, as they can get quite dusty. I wipe down the power cord and water line, as they also accumulate dust. And, I wipe down the cabinet around the fridge, as that also gets dusty. I also take a Swiffer to the dusty wall behind the fridge.
Then, you can clean the floor under your fridge as you would normally clean your floor.
Tip: If you are afraid of damaging your floors while pulling out your fridge, test it a little bit at a time as you are pulling it out. The first time I pulled out my fridge, I was afraid I would damage the hardwood floor. But, I pulled it out a little at a time. I met no resistance, heard no scratching or scraping, and it was rolling out really easily. I pushed it back to make sure I wasn’t scratching the floor. Everything was fine. There are probably some videos online that will show you some tips & tricks for pulling out your fridge.
After: After everything is clean, I push the fridge back into place.
Happy Spring cleaning!
