I’ve come to enjoy visiting our local thrift stores and discovering new treasures. I started thrift shopping when I started to realize that our budget wouldn’t be able to keep pace with my kids’ growth. We love finding the big toy items like their wagons, trikes and bicycles for less than $5. There are so many wonderful bargains to be had.
As time passed, I started looking beyond the kid’s section. I started keeping an eye out for unique pieces to add to our home. I want to add signature pieces throughout my house to give it character.
The other weekend, my cousin and I spent an entire weekend thrift store hopping and found so many wonderful pieces. One of my favorites was an ornate mirror with a gold finish. It was less than $5. I’d been on the lookout for a nice mirror to add into my master bedroom closet.
A couple years ago I had purged a great deal out of the closet. It was enough to create a nice shelving area to put my jewelry and a mirror. The mirror that was there was not cutting it. Cheaply made and not nearly big enough. This treasure was going to be the perfect addition.
Here is a before picture of the mirror, prepped for painting:
I was drawn to the beading around the frame and the ornate design at the top. The details definitely drew me in.
We made the decision to paint it red and to distress it a little to let the gold come through. I wanted a pop of color in my closet. I also planned to use it in the photography studio when clients came in to get their hair and makeup done. I thought a red would be a nice pop against the blue settee in the studio.
For paint, we used (affiliate link) Americana Chalky Finish Paint – Romance. We prepped the mirror’s surface and started painting.
Here are the results.
I’m in love with it. It’s the perfect size. It’s got color and character. It’s just right!
Love it! Thrift stores are so fun.
I know! I’ve found some incredible items lately
