If you’re traveling with your family to Sacramento, be sure to add the California State Railroad Museum. It’s a great place to visit if you’re traveling with kids.
California State Railroad Museum
Located in the picturesque Old Sacramento area of downtown, the California State Railroad Museum is one of our favorite museums for families. My son’s eyes were wide as they took in the large train exhibit located on the first floor. He played to his heart’s content at the Thomas the Train tables on the third floor, happily arranging his trains.
The museum has 3 floors of exploration. The first floor was my favorite with it’s exhibits of trains. Walk through some of the train exhibits from the classic locomotives to the fast bullet trains. I loved seeing the different china pieces through the dining trains. If my son wasn’t tugging on my arm, I’d read more on the history of the gold rush and look through the old artifacts.
Take the elevator upstairs and let your kids play with the trains. The model train sets here are wonderful! I loved the large display with the miniature trains and towns. It’s put together with such care. Train tables are also on display for your kids to play with. Getting them away from them may be an issue. My son responded with, “5 more minutes!” every time I prompted him to leave.
For the older kids, check out the High Speed Train Simulator on the second floor. They’ll learn how to drive the high speed train with additional stations that offer more technical information.
