Day 3: Signs of the Season
Every year it seems like Thanksgiving (sometimes even Halloween) is bypassed for Christmas. And that just makes me sad. I love decorating for Halloween and enjoy the sights of pumpkins and hay bales. I love seeing the oranges and browns of Thanksgiving. When the stores start putting out their holiday supplies too early, I find it hard to stay in the store. In fact, I was just at Michaels a couple days before Thanksgiving, trying to find additional decor for my Thanksgiving table and they had nothing – zilch – available for purchase….not even in the clearance rack.
What a shame. There is a time to celebrate every holiday and every season. This need to live our life in fast forward and for commercialism to take over the real reason for the season is a sad state of mind. Don’t even get me started on the stores that open on Thanksgiving Day, making their employees miss out on Thanksgiving dinner.
But I digress.
I start paying attention to the signs of the season the day after Thanksgiving. Here are just 3 of my favorites:
- The red Starbucks cup. Oh, yes, the red Starbucks cup with a non-fat, no-whip peppermint mocha. That’s a sight for sore eyes and a treat to my taste buds.
- Seeing our neighbors string up their lights. Our neighborhood is fairly festive so most of them our out on Thanksgiving weekend, getting an early start to their holiday displays. The kids LOVE this the most.
- And of course, our Christmas tree. As I mentioned in the first day of Blogmas post, shopping for our Christmas tree is a family tradition and a definite start to our holiday season.
What are some of the favorite sights of the season in your neck of the woods?

I’m with you – Christmas decorations come out way too early anymore! It irks me when I can’t find decor for the current holiday because stores are a month ahead of the calendar.
It’s so disappointing!
I LOVE how you are starting your posts!
And I HATE the fact that Christmas decorations are out in the store BEFORE Halloween and there’s hardly ANYTHING for Thanksgiving! And I’m not a Starbucks drinker, but the Dutch Bros holiday cups came out on November 1. And NO ONE can complain because they still say “Love Abounds” on them! 😛
